As Chinese students mourn the death of Hu Yaobang, hero to those desiring a more open society and the right of political protest in China, Chinese troops open fire on students and innocent bystanders on June 4, 1989. This is known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing, China. As a result of the protests, liberalizing leaders such as Deng Xiaoping were marginalized in the ruling Communist Party as those few rights which had been allowed to creep into Chinese society were rolled back. The Tiananmen Square protests and massacre ended their hopes for expanded human and civil rights in China.
